Capacitor-start/run and shaded-pole
Capacitor-start motors add a capacitor in the start circuit for higher starting torque. Capacitor-start capacitor-run (or PSC) keeps capacitance in the circuit for running. Shaded-pole motors are simple, low-torque, and common on small fans.
Capacitor-start induction-run
Same family as resistance-start, but a start capacitor increases phase shift and starting torque. Centrifugal switch (or relay) still drops the start circuit after acceleration. A shorted/open cap = hard start or no start.
Capacitor-start capacitor-run / PSC
Designed for quieter running and better running PF/torque. May not use a centrifugal switch on PSC designs—the capacitor stays in. Wrong microfarads or voltage rating fails early.
Diagnosing capacitors
Out-of-tolerance capacitance, high ESR, bulging cans, and open circuits are common. Replace with correct µF and voltage class; never “close enough” on start caps for hard loads.
Shaded-pole motors
A copper shading ring on part of each pole delays flux there, producing a weak rotating component. Low starting and running torque; long life; hard to reverse (often must flip the whole stator).
Application sense
Compressors and hard-start loads want capacitor-start (or better). Clock motors and tiny fans may be shaded-pole. Matching type to load prevents chronic hard-start callbacks.
Start vs run capacitor ratings
Start capacitors are often intermittent-duty, higher µF, in plastic cans. Run capacitors are continuous-duty, oil-filled metal cans, lower µF. Swapping roles is a fire/failure pattern. Match type, µF, and voltage.
Hard-start kits
Across-the-line hard-start add-ons help some compressor capacitor-start motors. They are not universal medicine for every single-phase motor. Identify the motor, then select the kit.
Shaded-pole limits
If a shaded-pole motor struggles, check mechanical drag and voltage. Rewinding rarely makes economic sense—replacement with the correct duty motor usually wins.

Numbers and habits that save you in the field
Before you speak, write down:
- What topology or machine you have in front of you.
- Voltages and currents with the measurement point.
- Frequency or rpm if they apply.
- What the nameplate or diagram says.
- What changes if you isolate one part of the circuit.
A diagnosis without those data is conversation, not the trade.

Safety relationship
Energized measurement needs PPE, a meter of the right category, and a plan if the reading does not make sense. Capacitors, inductive fields, rotating shafts, and power neutrals do not forgive haste. If the procedure says de-energize and verify absence of voltage, that rules.
Field case
Situation. Condenser fan is shaded-pole and someone installs a “hard start kit” capacitor package meant for a compressor capacitor-start motor.
How to think. Wrong topology. Fix bearings/voltage/replacement motor—do not invent a start winding.
Conclusion: motor type dictates the repair kit.
