Grounding

Grounding gives fault current a low-resistance path to earth so conductive surfaces stay near ground potential instead of sitting energized. The third prong ties appliance cases to ground — if a hot touches the case, current flows to ground and overcurrent devices can trip. Never cut the ground pin. Full system rules live in code Article 250; grounding and bonding are not optional extras.

Why grounding matters

Grounding is among the most important safety topics in the electrical field. It provides a low-resistance path to ground so conductive objects do not remain at a high potential during faults.

Many appliances use three-wire cords: hot, neutral, and equipment ground. The ground pin connects to the case. If an ungrounded conductor touches the case, ground conductors carry current to ground, hopefully clearing the fault quickly.

Never defeat the ground pin

The third prong on a plug must not be cut off or bypassed with cheater adapters on grounded equipment. That leaves the case able to float hot during an internal fault — you become the ground path when you touch it.

Customers will ask you to “just make it work with two prongs.” Your answer is education and a legal, listed fix: proper grounding, GFCI where permitted as substitute protection per code, or replacement equipment.

Grounding vs GFCI — complementary

Grounding gives fault current a path so breakers trip and cases stay near earth potential.

GFCI detects imbalance when some current leaks through an alternate path (including you).

They solve related but not identical problems. Modern systems often use both where rules require. Removing one because the other exists is a category error.

System grounding (big picture)

Service grounding, grounding electrode conductors, bonding of pipes and structural metal, and equipment grounds form a system. Article 250 in the NEC family defines requirements far beyond this overview.

Field habits for beginners:

  • pull equipment grounds with circuits,
  • bond metal boxes and devices per method,
  • do not use the earth as the sole return for normal load current,
  • treat green/bare conductors as life safety, not spare copper.

What good grounding looks like on the job

  • Receptacles test with ground continuity to panel ground path.
  • Metal housings on motors and gear are bonded.
  • Ground paths are continuous — no “ground through the paint on the box.”
  • After remodels, old two-wire locations get handled per adopted code (rewire, GFCI/AFCI options, labeling) — not ad hoc.

When you tighten a ground screw, you are not doing “extra work” — you are completing the shock/fire path for faults.

Grounding mistakes kill quietly

Symptoms of grounding failure:

  • tingle on appliance case,
  • GFCI trips when case is touched,
  • shock when touching two metal objects at different potentials,
  • equipment that “works” but trips GFCIs on another circuit.

Fix the path, not the symptom. A jumper to a random water pipe without understanding bonding rules can create new hazards.

Bonding vs grounding (field language)

In daily talk, people mix grounding (connection to earth/reference) and bonding (connecting metal parts together). In fault conditions you care that metal you touch is at the same potential as the earth reference — achieved by equipment grounding conductors and bonding jumpers sized and routed per code.

When you install a metal box, the ground screw is not decorative — it completes the fault path so a hot-to-box contact trips the breaker instead of waiting for a person.

Testing grounds you did not pull

On service calls, verify existing grounds before you energize new work: outlet tester, continuity from box to panel ground path, visual check for cut-off cords. Remodels often hide bootleg grounds or abandoned EGCs.

If grounding is missing and code allows a listed mitigation (for example GFCI with label where permitted), install exactly what the adopted code permits — not a social-media shortcut.

Subpanels and separate buildings

Grounding gets subtle at subpanels and detached structures — neutral/ground separation, electrode systems, and bonding jumpers follow Article 250 rules you will study in later courses. For now: never invent a local ground rod “because it seemed easier”; follow the diagram and the adopted code for that job’s edition.

Field case

Situation. A shop uses a bench grinder with the ground pin cut off and a cheater plug on an old two-wire outlet. Operator feels tingle on the metal frame when moisture is on the floor.

How to think with this lesson.

  • Case is not bonded to ground — fault or leakage cannot clear properly.
  • Moisture lowers body resistance (current-effects lesson).
  • Correct fix: listed grounding path or code-permitted GFCI protection with proper labeling — not another cheater.
