Protective clothing and PPE

PPE is chosen for the hazard: hard hat and eye protection almost everywhere; hearing protection in loud areas; fire-retardant clothing where arc flash is possible; rated gloves for live work; Kevlar against cuts; harness and lanyard when fall risk exists. PPE fails when it is missing, damaged, or treated as optional fashion.

PPE matches the hazard, not the habit

Construction and maintenance workers wear protective clothing dictated by the environment and the task. PPE is the last line of defense after engineering controls, LOTO, and safe work practices — but it is still mandatory when required.

If the site rule says hard hat and safety glasses at the property line, that includes you on a five-minute walk-through.

Head and eye protection

Head protection — typically a nonconductive hard hat — is required on most sites. Electrician hats often mount safety goggles for dust or splash work.

Eye protection is required for employees and often for all visitors in production areas. Options range from goggles to safety glasses with side shields; sometimes a face shield is required for grinding or arc work.

Normal street glasses are not a substitute unless they meet safety standards with side protection.

Hearing protection

OSHA guidance ties hearing protection to ambient sound levels at the work site. In loud plant areas you will see earplugs or earmuffs. Hearing loss is gradual and permanent — by the time you “get used to” the noise, damage may already be done.

Wear what the site requires even for “quick” tasks.

Fire-retardant (FR) clothing and arc flash

Fire-retardant clothing is required for personnel who may be exposed to arc flash — engineers, electricians, and maintenance staff working on high-power gear such as transformers and motor control centers.

An arc flash can ignite normal clothing and kill at significant distance. MCC gear can release enough energy to injure someone many feet away. FR clothing does not make you invincible; it gives you seconds to survive while you escape.

Match FR requirements to the facility’s arc-flash study and labels when present.

Gloves: shock, cut, and inspection

Leather gloves with rubber inserts are used when live work is authorized — rated for a voltage class. Inspect for holes, tears, or ozone cracks before every use. A pinhole defeats the purpose.

Kevlar gloves help prevent cuts when stripping cable with a sharp blade — a common apprentice injury. Cut resistance is not shock resistance; do not confuse glove types.

Harness, lanyard, and when to tie off

A safety harness buckles around the upper body with leg, shoulder, and chest straps. A D-ring on the back accepts a lanyard — typically about 6 feet — tied to a stable anchor above the worker.

Wear a harness when:

  1. Working more than 6 feet above ground or floor,
  2. Working near a hole or drop-off,
  3. Working on high scaffolding.

Falls kill electricians too — not only shock. Inspect harness and lanyard per manufacturer and company rules.

Visitor PPE and setting the example

Sites often require everyone — not only employees — to wear hard hats and eye protection in production areas. As the electrical crew, you set the tone: if you walk without glasses, helpers and customers copy you.

Keep spare safety glasses in the truck. Inspect PPE before use: cracked hard hat shells, scratched faceshields, and expired rubber gloves belong in the trash, not on your hands. If the date stamp on rubber gloves is past due, they fail inspection even if they look fine.

Arc flash labels and distance

Where arc-flash studies have been done, labels on gear may list incident energy and required PPE category. Read them before you open doors. FR clothing does not replace standoff distance and de-energized work when those are available.

If there is no label, assume energy is unknown and follow company policy for live work — usually meaning you do not open energized equipment without authorization and proper PPE.

Foot protection and site dress

Electrical work is not only hands and eyes. Steel-toe boots (where required), slip-resistant soles on wet sites, and long pants reduce injuries from dropped conduit, rolling ladders, and hot slag from cutting. Dress like someone who expects to climb, kneel, and carry — because you will.

Replace PPE that took a hit — hard hats after impact, gloves after puncture, FR shirts after splash — even if damage looks minor. Damaged PPE is a souvenir, not protection.

PPE storage in the truck

Store helmets out of sunlight, keep gloves away from sharp tools that pinhole them, and hang FR clothing so it does not stay wadded and creased. Dirty safety glasses fog faster and hide hazards — clean them with the method the manufacturer allows.

Five minutes of PPE care Monday prevents a forty-minute supply run mid-job.

Field case

Situation. A technician opens a live 480 V MCC bucket wearing cotton coveralls and standard work gloves “for a quick voltage reading.” A flash occurs at a loose stab; clothing ignites; hands are burned through the gloves — which were not rated for the voltage.
