General safety rules

Working with electricity starts with habits, not luck. Never trust a circuit is dead until you test it yourself. Think before you touch, avoid horseplay, do not work alone on hazardous work, keep one hand out of the current path when you can, learn first aid and CPR, and stay sober on the job. No guard device replaces your judgment.

Safety is your job first

Electricity does not care about your experience level. Safety is the job of each individual — for yourself and for everyone near you. That is especially true in the electrical field, where a mistake can kill in seconds.

These rules are not “extra credit.” They are the foundation every other lesson in this course builds on.

Never work energized if you can de-energize

When power can be disconnected, disconnect it. Then prove it is off before you touch conductors.

Use this three-step meter check every time:

  1. Test your meter on a known live circuit to confirm the meter works.
  2. Turn off the power and test the circuit you will work on — it must read de-energized.
  3. Test the meter on a known live circuit again to confirm the meter still works.

After opening the source, install a warning tag at the point of disconnection. If possible, add a lock so no one restores power while you work.

Circuit breakers, fuses, and “Joe said he turned it off” are not proof. Your meter test is proof.

Think — the rule behind all rules

Of all safety rules, think before you act may be the most important. Equipment can be guarded and labeled, but nothing replaces a technician who stops for five seconds and asks: “What am I about to touch?”

Many people have been killed by circuits that were “obviously dead.” Do not depend on someone else to open a circuit for you. On higher voltages, use insulated gloves and insulated meter probes rated for the voltage under test.

If the answer to “Could this cost me my life?” is yes, slow down.

Horseplay, alone work, and one-hand practice

Horseplay has no place around live parts or moving machinery. You can injure someone else — or they can injure you — with a joke at the wrong second.

Do not work alone when the location or circuit is hazardous. Have someone who can shut off power or start CPR if needed. Several shocks can stop breathing or put the heart into fibrillation.

When you must work near energized parts, use one hand when possible. Current from hand to hand passes through the heart. A severe hand-to-foot shock may be survivable when the same current hand-to-hand would not be.

First aid, CPR, and substance abuse

Anyone working on electrical equipment — especially above about 50 volts — should learn first aid and CPR. You may save your own life or a coworker’s.

Alcohol and drugs do not belong on a work site. They impair judgment the same way they do on the highway — except now the vehicle is a panel full of energy. Many employers test for substances; violations can end careers on the first offense depending on policy.

If you are not fit to work safely, you are not fit to work.

Mindset before the meter

Before you open a single lesson on GFCI, grounding, or fire class, you should be able to say:

  1. I will not trust “off” until I test with a working meter.
  2. I will tag and lock when I can.
  3. I will not work alone on dangerous work without backup.
  4. I will keep one hand out of the path when I can.
  5. I know where CPR-trained help is on my crew.

When those are habits, the rest of this course becomes usable in the field — not just words on a screen.

High voltage and insulated tools

On high-voltage equipment, insulated gloves and meter probes are not optional extras — they are part of the test procedure. Match probe and glove rating to the voltage class you are measuring.

Even at lower voltages, insulated tools reduce accidental contact with adjacent live parts in crowded panels. The goal is the same: control what you touch and prove energy state before conductors are bare.

If your shop assigns a live-work permit, it exists because these rules were written in blood — follow the permit scope exactly.

Field case

Situation. A helper is told the lighting circuit is dead. The journeyman left for lunch. The helper starts stripping conductors without testing. The neutral is shared with another live circuit — the helper gets a shock across both hands.

How to think with this lesson.

  • “They turned it off” is not the three-step test.
  • Working alone removed the person who could have shut power and started CPR.
  • Two hands on live parts increased heart-path risk.

Learning conclusion: de-energize when you can, then prove it yourself; do not work alone on hazardous circuits; think before you strip.
