Troubleshooting: common cases
A short list of repeat commercial cases covers most weekly calls: door/infiltration, dirty condenser, failed defrost, stuck solenoid, refrigerant leak, and ice-machine water/harvest faults. Pattern-match quickly—then still prove the cause with the method from the previous lesson.
Case A — Warm cooler, iced evaporator
Think infiltration or low airflow first. Gaskets, door closer, blocked return, failed fan. Refrigerant last.
Case B — High head, long run, trip
Dirty condenser, grease, failed fan, recirculation on remote. Clean and restore rejection.
Case C — Freezer soft product after night
Defrost did not heat or did not terminate; drain iced; heaters open. Check defrost amps and termination sensor.
Case D — One case warm on a rack
Liquid solenoid coil, EPR, TXV/EEV, or coil iced. Sister cases OK → do not touch total rack charge first.
Case E — Gradual warm + bubbles / dye / oil
Leak. Find with detector/bubbles; repair; replace drier; evacuate; weigh in. Stop topping off weekly.
Case F — Ice machine long freeze / no harvest
Kitchen heat, dirty condenser, scale, hot-gas valve, water fill. Use cycle timing.

Communication
Tell owners in product language: “door seal is letting in moist air and building ice,” not only “low superheat.”
Case G — Power and control quirks
Tripped GFCI on condensate pumps, loose door switches killing evaporators, and mis-set defrost clocks after DST changes show up weekly. Add them to your mental list beside the classic six.
Case H — After another contractor
Find gauge scars, added piercing valves, and mystery jumper wires. Common cases include “solved” by jumping a float or pressure control. Remove unsafe jumpers as part of the repair.
Prioritization under pressure
When the whole store is warm, plant-level power and condenser come first. When one door is warm, circuit isolation comes first. Matching urgency to pattern keeps you from boiling the ocean.
Owner coaching that sticks
Show a torn gasket or grease-clogged coil photo on the ticket. Visual proof turns “you guys never fix it” into a maintenance agreement conversation.
Practice on the job
Before you leave the topic in your head, force a slow walkthrough on the next real call:
- Name the component or condition you are standing in front of without looking at the ticket.
- Say out loud what “good” looks like for airflow, temperatures, and safety.
- Write one measurement you will take even if the customer wants a parts swap now.
- Tie the symptom to a cause you can prove—not a habit charge or a jumper.
- Recheck after the fix under the same ambient and load conditions you logged at the start.
That five-step habit turns book knowledge into field judgment. If you cannot explain the “why” to a helper on their first month, you do not own the lesson yet.
Tie-backs that prevent callbacks
Callbacks usually come from skipping the boring proofs: clean air paths, correct control sequence, solid liquid or safe vapor where the design expects it, and safeties that still work. When pressures look confusing, return to the physical story—heat in, heat out, metering, and compression—then re-measure. When a heating or IAQ complaint shows up, return to air, fuel/electric safety, and moisture before you upsell gadgets.
Keep OEM charts and nameplates above folklore. Typical numbers in training are compasses; the plate and the chart for today’s indoor/outdoor conditions are the map. Photograph settings you change so the next visit does not undo a careful repair.
Field case
Situation. Weekly “add gas” on a remote walk-in. Find oil at a vibrating wall penetration rubbing the suction line.
How to think it.
- Common case E: repair rub-through, protect line, evacuate, weigh charge.
- Add isolation and support.
- Callbacks stop.
